How Covid Changed My Life

Four years removed from Covid, it's hard to believe that it still has an effect on my life. My wife and I both ended up contracting Covid after I had gone to a real estate closing and met with the buyers to sign all the paperwork. What the buyers didn’t mention at the time, was they had both been exposed to the virus, and although I, along with everyone at the closing, was wearing a mask, I still contracted the virus and took it home to my then girlfriend, Sommer.

There seemed to be mild and severe cases of the virus among the people I knew but unfortunately, Sommer and I contracted the severe version of the virus, and we were both down for 40 days. Out of the 40 days, 30 of those days were downright horrible. I was barely able to stay awake, but I knew I did not want to go to the hospital because I thought it was a death sentence. So, I would make myself get up and walk around the living room or to my shop as much as possible just to keep my O2 levels up. Sommer suffered from the virus more than I did; in fact, she still has issues from it to this day.

Despite the suffering we both endured from Covid, several good things actually came from it. First, my sleep patterns changed for the better, and my energy levels skyrocketed once I got over the virus. The best part, however, was the fact my attitude toward life itself changed significantly for the better. I started making decisions to try some things I had always wanted to do, but never had.

For years, I watched my daughter, Sadie, and several of my friends sing and play in bands, and I have always had a deep love for music. Years ago, I could not have imagined being part of a band, but today, I play harmonica, some percussion, and sing a little in a great band called Dramatic Endings playing with some extremely talented musicians and performing several songs I have always loved.

I’m also involved in a new podcast project with my friend, Tom Duggin, called the T² Podcast, where we talk about what’s going on around us plus interview people from all walks of life that Tom and I have gotten to know over the years. I’m also trying my hand at writing a blog for the first time!

After swearing I would never get married again, I took the plunge and married Sommer. Having Covid at the same time certainly brought us closer together, and I can honestly say she’s even more than my wife, but my best friend.

I also became more involved in my community, working to help grow the downtown area of Smithville, plus I decided to run for the DeKalb County Commission and was elected in my district. My goal is to give back to the city and county I love as much as I possibly can.

I know many negatives came out of the Covid pandemic, and I certainly hope to never be that sick again in my entire life. However, I must say the virus gave me a more positive and completely new outlook on my life. The changes I have made in my life since the virus have all been for the better, and for that, I truly am thankful.
